Shrek Forever After Tops Sex and the City 2

Lovers of Shrek Forever After kept the animated movie at the No. 1 spot for a second weekend as it made $43.3 million from Friday to Sunday. It has made a total of $133.1 million in the U.S. box office.
“Sex and the City 2,” followed at No. 2, earning $32.1 million for the opening weekend and a far cry from the $56.8 million opening weekend of the first one in 2008. “Sex and the City 2” has made a total of $46.3 million so far.

THE SYNOPSIS
After rescuing a princess, getting hitched and fathering triplets, Shrek is feeling over-domesticated. ‘He has lost his roar,’ says director Mike Mitchell. ‘It used to send villagers running away in terror. Now they run to him and ask him to sign their pitchforks and torches.’”

To regain his ogre mojo, he strikes a deal with Rumpelstiltskin, the wee troublemaker who popped up briefly in Shrek 2 and 3. Of course, the pact goes awry and Shrek must confront what life would be like in Far Far Away if he had never existed. That translates into Donkey being forced into cart-pulling duty, fat and lazy Puss in Boots trading his sword for a pink bow and the underhanded Rumpelstiltskin ruling the kingdom

Fiona Aforma Amuzie is the 2010 Most Beautiful Girl in Nigeria

Miss Plateau – Fiona Aforma Amuzie – MBGN World

Fiona Aforma Amuzie is the 2010 Most Beautiful Girl in Nigeria (MBGN)

Read more on Bella Naija.

The Most Beautiful Girl in Nigeria (MBGN) pageant originally began as Miss Universe Nigeria in 1983, and was created by Silverbird Group. It was later re-named Most Beautiful Girl in Nigeria in 1986. Winners represent Nigeria in Miss World and, until recently, Miss Universe – currently, only the first-runner up participates in Miss Universe.

After Miss Nigeria stopped representing the country abroad, MBGN title holders continued from where Miss Nigeria had stopped. Originally, contestants were allowed to wear maillot swimsuits of their choice during the swimsiut parade. Identical bikinis are now used instead. The contestants do not always represent the states they hail from – nearly all of the contestants who represent northern states come from the South, as the predominantly Islamic north frown upon beauty pageants. Last year, Glory Chuku, represented northern state Nassarawa, despite being Igbo.

Although no contest was held for a 1989 winner, Regina Askia took over from winner Bianca Onoh after the latter decided to step down, automatically making Askia MBGN 1989. A contest took place in December 1989, and Sabina Umeh, was announced as the winner for 1990. Emma Komlosy became the first mixed race winner of MBGN in 1996. Previous mixed race contestants had included Lilian Bach and Ibinabo Fiberesima. Komlosy’s father is of Hungarian descent, and her mother, singer/actress Patti Boulaye is from Delta. In 2001, following Agbani Darego victory at Miss World, MBGN first runner-up Ann Suinner was asked to step in as the new title holder for five months.

A number of contestants who participated in MBGN but failed to win tried their luck in Miss Nigeria. Successful contestants include Janet Fateye (Miss Nigeria 1993), and Sylvia Edem (Miss Nigeria 2002).

In 2007, Silverbird announced that the pageant will now produce five representatives, as opposed to one winner. The representatives will take part in beauty contests around the world. Several past winners and participants of MBGN have managed to carve out successful careers in modelling, acting, business and politics. Others, like Rhihole Gbinigie and Sandra Petgrave, have sank into obscurity.

The current title holder is Fiona Amuzie Afora, who represented Plateau.

LG MOBILE PHONES PROVES STYLISH TECHNOLOGY IS ALWAYS ‘IN FASHION’ WITH EXCLUSIVE LG FASHION TOUCH EVENT

LG Fashion Touch hosted by Victoria Beckham and Eva Longoria Parker draws the spotlight on LG Lotus Elite and LG Rumor Touch with a star-studded event

43628-hi-2445

West Hollywood, CA – May 25, 2010 /PRNewswire/ — LG Electronics MobileComm U.S.A, Inc. (LG Mobile Phones) and well-known fashion enthusiasts Victoria Beckham and Eva Longoria Parker teamed up for an exclusive “LG Fashion Touch,” event to celebrate personal style and LG’s handsets, LG Lotus Elite and LG Rumor Touch. Embracing each woman’s personal style, the event brought Victoria’s bold and edgy style to life with LG Lotus Elite while Eva’s more classic taste radiated through LG Rumor Touch. Available to Sprint customers nationwide, both handsets encourage users to flaunt their personal style through their mobile phones and feature distinctive front touchscreens as well as full QWERTY keypads.

Celebrities, stylists, industry professionals and fashion enthusiasts who embody the very essence of style arrived at the Soho House in West Hollywood, CA to walk the red carpet and attend the star-studded event. Those in attendance included Victoria Beckham, Eva Longoria Parker, Jessica Simpson, Ashlee Simpson, Vanessa Hudgens, Rachel Zoe, Anna Kendrick, January Jones, Gabrielle Union, Rashida Jones, Rosario Dawson, Kim Kardashian, Chloe Kardashian, and many more. Guests at the party received a hands-on demonstration of each handset and enjoyed an evening devoted to personal expression and stylish technology.

Associate Vice President of Consumer and Trade Marketing, Tim O’Brien, who attended the event, said, “LG Fashion Touch was the perfect example of how style and technology can come together to create something truly unique. We are honored to have partnered with Victoria Beckham and Eva Longoria Parker on this campaign. In tune with how technology enhances their lives, Victoria and Eva brought a key understanding of how a handset can be an extension of an individual’s personal style. Enriching LG’s fashion heritage, LG Lotus Elite and LG Rumor Touch allow consumers to seamlessly blend fashion with an innovative mobile device.”

Other elements of the partnership included a print and online campaign, series of MTV vignettes and a consumer promotion. Shot by fashion photographer, Ellen Von Unwerth, the print ads featured Eva and Victoria posing with their respective phones while donning fashions reflective of their personal styles. The series of MTV vignettes, produced and directed by documentarist Doug Keeve, depict Victoria and Eva with up and coming fashion designers, Yotam Solomon and Oday Shakar. The designers were tasked with creating clothing designs inspired by the idea of expressing personal style in a technological and socially-connected world. Revealed at the event, the designers’ pieces proved that style and functionality can always go hand-in-hand. LG also created a Fashion Touch Style Quiz to engage consumers on the LG Fashion Touch Facebook page. By taking the quiz, consumers could find out which phone and style suited them best and were entered into a sweepstakes for a chance to win tickets to the event.

LG Lotus Elite is a second generation handset to the widely popular messaging device, LG Lotus. LG Rumor Touch is the newest handset in a long line of QWERTY successes including LG Rumor and LG Rumor². Both are available exclusively through Sprint.

Curtain Falls on the 63rd annual Cannes Film Festival

63rd cannes Film Festival

The 63rd Cannes Film Festival ended last night and Supple magazine is looking forward to the 64th edition in 2011.

The Cannes Film Festival is the world cup finals of the film world attracting thousands of filmmakers, lovers of movies and tourists to Cannes every May, but unlike last year Nigeria did not have a pavilion and only few Nigerian journalists were there. The Guardian, The Nation and Supple magazine were the major Nigerian news media.

Well, Cannes will always get better with over 25, 000 film professionals, over 5, 000 journalists and thousands of tourists thronging the French Riviera to watch the best movies in and out of competition and of course the popular Cannes market premieres with millions of other viewers watching on TV and Internet. As Thomas Sotinel, the Movies Section Editor of the prestigious Le Monde said, that Cannes Film festival is where you see the interpretation of global changes in the eyes of the film industry, attracting the gaze of the five continents. Filmmakers do not only tell our stories, but also capture history in the making.

Senegal and South Africa competed for the top prizes and one of the most moving and touching Films was Life, Above All, a movie on the stigma and trauma of AIDS in South Africa. Many of the viewers left the theatre in tears after seeing it. But the question is; where is Nigeria? We need to work harder to compete with the best in the film world. Nigeria has ambitious directors, daring producers, outstanding actors and actresses who can excel at every film festival in the world.

See you next May.

Apichatpong WEERASETHAKUL of Thailand Wins the 2010 Palme d’Or

Director Apichatpong Weerasethakul poses with his Palme d'Or 1

The 63rd Cannes Film Festival ended with the thai filmmaker, Apichatpong WEERASETHAKUL winning the Palme d’Or, the highest prize for his film “LUNG BOONMEE RALUEK CHAT (Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives)”.

If Thailand can go as high as winning the most coveted prize at the Cannes, then Nigeria can produce the films that can qualify for competition and win top prizes. What is the benefit of producing thousands of movies since 1992 to date and not a single Nollywood movie has even qualified for the Official Selection of the Cannes Film Festival? Nigerian filmmakers must step up to compete with the best in the world or go and dump their mediocre movies in the Atlantic Ocean before coming to the Côte d’Azur and get dazed and fazed by the outstanding filmmakers from all over the world.

Congratulations to all the worthy winners.

SYNOPSIS:

Suffering from acute kidney failure, Uncle Boonmee has chosen to spend his final days surrounded by his loved ones in the countryside. Surprisingly, the ghost of his deceased wife appears to care for him, and his long lost son returns home in a non-human form. Contemplating the reasons for his illness, Boonmee treks through the jungle with his family to a mysterious hilltop cave — the birthplace of his first life…

Lindsay Lohan’s Trip to 63rd Cannes Film Festival

    Lindsay Lohan

Fun loving American actress Lindsay Lohan was sighted at two exclusive luxury yacht parties at the 63rd Cannes Film Festival. The first was the Chopard 150th Anniversary Party at the Palm Beach, Pal Palm Beach, Pointe Croisette on May 17 and another one last Friday night on the 21st. Lindsay was at the Cannes for the publicity of Inferno the film in which she has been cast as Linda Lovelace the 70s porn star star of Deep Throat. But she returned to the United State the following day Saturday to face a legal case after a Angeles judge issued an arrest warrant for Lindsay Lohan last Thursday, because she failed to appear for a court hearing on her 2007 drink-driving case. Her attorney Shawn Chapman Holley said she would have been at the hearing, but her passport was stolen in Cannes.

“The fact is she intended to be here today, she had a ticket to be here, her passport was stolen, she’s filled out a police report in Cannes and as far as I’m concerned she had a valid reason for not being here,” Holley said.

Lindsay had to pay a $100000 bail to avoid being jailed.
